9. Reclaiming Portuguese Tax (IVA)
What is IVA?
IVA is charged at 23% on all delegates, including Portuguese registered companies. It is the Portuguese equivalent of VAT found in most European countries. The Festival pays the IVA to the Portuguese administration on receipt of your payment, NOT on the date of issuing sales invoices. The tax point date for IVA is the receipt date of your payment that is also the invoice date.
Why must delegates pay IVA?
The Festival provides a service directly to delegates in Lisbon, Portugal that is subjected to IVA (that is, you will have to pay IVA on any goods and services purchased while you are in Lisbon). IVA is applied to all companies registering. This means that you will have to pay IVA at 23%, you can reclaim your IVA (see below for procedure)
How to reclaim the IVA
The Festival cannot assist you in reclaiming your IVA. However, IVA can be reclaimed from your own government tax website. This will then be sent to Portugal to reclaim the VAT. Please liaise directly with your own government tax website or approach a local tax representative who can assist you.
